Summary:
In China, researchers founded that fifteen brands of common table salt bought at supermarkets across China have plastic inside. The plastics that are used to make water bottles, polyethylene terephthalate, as well as polyethylene, cellophane, and a wide variety of other plastics. Also, the micro beads that are used for face wash. To make salt, it has to be in the ocean, so they evaporate the water leaving the salt particles to be in the market and founded that there are plastics in them. Plastic contamination in ocean caused plastics in the salt, like water bottles in the ocean, plastic bags, etc that broken down into pieces. The researchers measured more than 250 particles of plastic per lb of sea salt. Huahong Shi of East China Normal University also found tiny particles of plastic in salt sourced from briny lakes, briny wells, and salt mines, although at lower levels—between 3 and 165 particles/ lb. A person consuming the Chinese sea salt then that person would ingest 1,000 plastic micro particles annually. This problem might be all over the world, stated by Sherri Mason.
My Reflection:
After reading the article, I was surprised that plastics can be found in salt, this article struck me that plastic pollution are very worse than I can imagine. Like imagine, this doesn't happened before in the past but now the human population is growing, more people are using plastics and throwing them away, and leads to the ocean and it leads back to us by food. This is a serious problem, even our food is being contaminated by our actions, not just us that's being affected by this but also the marine organisms and the environment. This can only be solved by recycling, if we can recycle then there we can reduce the plastic pollution in the ocean.
