Summary:The endangered slow loris, the world's only venomous primate, are hard to protect due to illegal pet trade. It was once one species and two subspecies is actually four types of loris species. The loris appearance hid them in the shadows of different kinds of loris species and were only revealed when researchers examined them closely. Since four species is hard to handle to maintain their forest habitat but due to deforestation, their numbers are decreasing. Also, illegal pet trading in the black market, the loris are sold as pets, props, and used for traditional Asian medicines. The new species are very hard to find or their numbers are quite small because the researchers are assisting in conservation efforts for enigmatic primates.
Loris are easy to catch from the wilds because they are timid but their but their bites are toxic. In Indonesia, they are sold for as little as $20, the sellers take off their front teeth and venomous elbow patches with pliers, nail clippers or wire cutters. Then they are stuffed into to a tiny cage to sell them, they die shortly due to disrupt them from their sleep patterns, and unable to eat because of their front teeth being removed. One of the loris species are being protected by Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which bans international trade in the animals even it still occurs. |
Reflection:Loris are great examples of illegal trading, they are being treated poorly by the sellers and they died due to the treatment of sellers pr the buyers. I always think that, what does buyers feel when they bought these animals from the market? Do they always think what the animals feel when they bought them? What do they achieve when they bought them? I have lots of questions for buyers in the black market. I think that the animals that are being sold are very scared and sad because they instead live freely in their habitat and with their community but they are being sold off as a pet to humans.
